Yesterday Pastor Jeff preached in our family service about offenses. Pastor preached mostly about when Christians offend one another. He listed nine fruits that result from taking the bait of offense. They are Hurt- Anger- Outrage- Jealousy- Resentment- Strife- Bitterness- Hatred- Envy.
Are any of these in your life or the life of your kids. All to often I hear a child say that they hate someone, or they are so angry about something. I wonder how many of those are because those people "offended" them. In a child's life I believe there are three types of people who may have caused them to take the bait of Satan.
The first type of person is a friend. Kids are pressured every day with peer pressure. They want to fit in. They want to have that best friend or a group of friends that they are close with. Has your child ever been had a friend offend them?
In Matthew 26: 31-35 and 69-75 we read the story of Peter's denial of Jesus. Peter was arguable one of the closest disciples to Jesus. Read this story with your kids. Talk about the choice that Peter made. Ask why they think Peter did what he did. Ask if they have ever had a friend turn their back on them in their moment of need. Ask them how they felt. Ask them how they think Jesus felt when Peter did this. Ask them what they would have done in this situation.
Read John 21. Talk about how Jesus forgave Peter and how Peter would be the leader of the church. Pray with your children that they will forgive their friends when they are offended by their friends. Pray that they would forgive even when their friends don't even know what they did.
